Zero Carbon Footprint Project
In January of 2015, the graduating class of the Green School conceived the idea of a “Bio Bus” as a part of their legacy service project. The idea was pitched as a biofueled “magic bus” that would help green the community’s transportation service and that would eventually expand to serve other parts of the island as well. Over the course of six months, the senior students worked endlessly to figure out how to develop a biodiesel school bus. And, with the help of their math teacher, they successfully problem solved their way to the launch of the Bio Bus pilot program in June of 2015. The program has since been passed on to a team of students that have further developed it into a social enterprise. Currently, the Bio Bus operates the only buses in Indonesia that run on 100% Biodiesel. Our 3 Bio Buses give thousands of rides each month and help spread awareness on the huge issues revolving around the use of used cooking oil in Indonesia. Recently, Bio Bus opened the first B(100) Pump Station in Indonesia. The Bio Bus Social Enterprise is excited to share their story with the whole world. Anyone out there who is ready or wishes to embark on a similar journey, please feel free to contact us. We would love to collaborate and help create a movement. Renewables are the way to go!
Zero Carbon Footprint Project
In 2014 Green School middle school students conducted a carpooling survey and based on their recommendation Green School started up the Bio Bus Social Enterprise. In October 2017, Bio Bus conducted a follow up carpool survey, to measure progress, find new patterns and contribute to the school-wide sustainability audit. Among many interesting findings the survey showed that Green School collectively drives 4,000 kilometers a day. That is equivalent to driving: Perth to Sydney, or San Francisco to New York, or 4 times across Java, or Barcelona to Moscow. Furthermore 60% of commuting vehicles only contained 1-2 students. These numbers revealed that Green School still had vast room for improvement and jolted Bio Bus to take a new broader approach that would target the entire Green School community. Since then Bio Bus has centered action-based learning around developing a non punitive credit/mitigation system. The team, aptly titled “Carbon Zero”, has conceived of formulae that proposes a 3 kg CO2/day pollution benchmark per student. The concept is simple. Using our calculator you will get your score. If you are under the benchmark and you join the “Carbon Karma Club” over the benchmark you are offered a variety of CO2e mitigation options, including recycling at Kembali, bringing in used cooking oil, or donating carbon zeroing programs. The team is proud to release a version 1.0 of our online app at Sustainable Solutions this year. We need you to beta test our carbon calculator to provide us with valuable feedback so that we may implement as policy for the 2018/19 school year. During this presentation there will be full transparency on our process and concept design. Your attendance and participation with be a valuable part of finalizing the product!
